What is Medication Management?

For some individuals, a comprehensive mental health treatment plan includes medication management. Psychiatric medication management is a type of mental health treatment where a licensed healthcare provider monitors the use of prescription medications to treat an individual’s mental health conditions. This process involves evaluating symptoms, prescribing medications, monitoring their effectiveness and any potential side effects, adjusting dosages as needed, and providing education on the safe and effective use of these medications.

Typically, medication management is only one part of a comprehensive treatment plan, and is commonly used in conjunction with some form of individual therapy. Some mental health conditions that may be treated with the use of medication include anxiety disorders, depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, and OCD.

In order to optimize the benefits of medication therapy, it is important for individuals receiving medication management to communicate regularly with their healthcare provider, report any changes in symptoms or side effects, and follow the prescribed treatment plan.

Who can benefit?

Medication management can benefit individuals who are experiencing a variety of mental health conditions, where the most up-to-date evidence based treatments include pharmacological intervention. Some common conditions that may be treated with medication management include:

  • Anxiety disorders (such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder)

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Depression

  • Mood disorders

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Sleep disorders

For individuals who have tried other forms of treatment, such as mental health counseling or individual therapy, without significant improvement in symptoms or those who are experiencing severe and persistent symptoms that are negatively impacting their daily functioning, medication management may be an appropriate addition to a comprehensive treatment plan.

At Tree of Life Counseling Center, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner can assess an individual's symptoms, medical history, and overall health to determine if medication may be helpful and appropriate.
