Building Stronger Bonds: Trust, Intimacy, and Love in Relationships
Building Stronger Bonds: Trust, Intimacy, and Love in Relationships
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner– a time to celebrate love and connection. Whether you’re in a new relationship, engaged, or have been married for decades, cultivating trust and intimacy is key to a thriving partnership. On this week’s episode of the More Than A Therapy Couch podcast, we sit down with experienced couples therapist Jimmy Passe, LPC, LCADC, ACS to explore why trust and intimacy matter and share tips on how to strengthen these essential pillars of a healthy relationship.
Why Trust is the Foundation of Love
Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship. It allows partners to feel safe, supported, and confident in their connection. Without trust, even small challenges can lead to misunderstandings, resentment, and emotional distance.
Signs of a Trusting Relationship:
Open and honest communication
Reliability and dependability
The ability to be vulnerable without fear of judgement
Passe shares “Teaching couples empathy, it’s something that everyone may feel like they understand or know. When I really talk about empathy with couples and have them do exercises, typically ‘I understand’ or ‘I feel’ statements, putting themselves in their partner shoes, especially when they are going through a conflict and it usually helps reduce that tension and bring them closer to really understand what their partners needs are”
Rebuilding trust after it’s broken is possible, but it takes time, effort, and often the guidance of a skilled therapist.
Intimacy: More Than Physical Connection
When people think of intimacy, they often think of physical closeness. However, emotional intimacy is an equally important part of a healthy relationship. Emotional intimacy promotes feelings of mutual understanding, acceptance, and authenticity. Some ways to build emotional intimacy include:
Practice Active Listening: Show your partner that you value their thoughts and feelings by giving them your full attention when having a conversation.
Share Your Dreams and Fears: Being vulnerable fosters deeper connections. Bond with your partner about mutual goals and challenges.
Spend Quality Time Together: Focus on activities that strengthen your bond, like cooking dinner, taking walks, or having meaningful conversations.
“If the emotional intimacy is lacking that can also have an effect on the physical intimacy, they may not want to be sexually intimate, may not want to hold hands, they may not even want to be around each other if that emotional safety is not there”
How Therapy Can Help Couples
Even the strongest couples face challenges. Life stressors, communication issues, and unmet needs can all strain a relationship. Couples counseling can make a huge difference in relationship success and satisfaction.
Benefits of Couples Therapy:
Improving communication skills
Resolving recurring conflicts
Strengthening emotional and physical intimacy
Rebuilding trust after a breach
Therapy provides a safe space to explore your relationship dynamics, understand each other better, and create actionable steps to improve your connection.
“Even when couples come into session, where they sit, if they’re looking at each other, if they can display public affection in front of the therapist, these are signs that the couple is close or connected, depending on their body language.”
Regardless of the relationship dynamic you and your partner may have, couples therapy allows you both to explore and improve upon your relationship in a safe, non-judgemental space.
Ready to Strengthen Your Relationship?
If you and a partner are experiencing relationship stressors that cannot be managed on your own or are interfering with your daily life, it may be time to consult a mental health professional, such as a therapist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.
