Anger Management

Anger is an emotional reaction based in an individual’s nervous system which results in several physical changes. Most individuals experience anger in response to specific situations, but when feelings of anger begin to happen more frequently than desired or interfere with interpersonal relationships it may be time to speak to a mental health professional about anger management therapy.

What is anger management therapy?

Anger management therapy is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as CBT or talk therapy, where an individual works one-on-one with a mental health professional to address underlying causes of anger, develop problem-solving and communication skills, and learn healthy coping strategies, such as mindfulness, meditation, exercise and other self-regulation tactics.

While anger is not officially recognized as a clinical diagnosis on its own, like depression and anxiety, persistent outbursts of anger may cause significant distress and dysfunction in an individual’s life. Therapy can be a great space to begin exploring these feelings and working toward managing and reducing their occurrence.

Who can benefit from anger management therapy?

While everyone who experiences anger can benefit from learning anger management skills, this form of therapy may be especially beneficial to those who experience mental health conditions that exacerbate one’s ability to feel and manage anger. Some of these conditions include:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Borderline personality disorder

  • Depression

  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder

  • Generalized anxiety disorder

  • Intermittent explosive disorder

  • Oppositional defiant disorder

Regardless if any co-occurring conditions may or may not be present, anger management therapy may be useful for anyone who is experiencing uncontrollable anger that results in feelings of distress or reduced quality of life.
